If you lift properly, you can lift some things safely.
The concern is stressing your abdomen. You can squeeze the baby or dislodge the placenta.

You are supposed to take it easy when you are pregnant because your body is working so hard to grow a baby and doesn't need to use energy to lift something heavy. It can cause a miscarriage.

Most of the other answers are right. Although,if you are use to lifting heavey things often,as in a routein job, you can still lift them while pregnant. The mucles are use to it and will not strain or hurt the baby. If you are not use to lifting heavy things then Yes you will hurt yourself and could cause a miscarrige. I lifted glider rocking chairs off a asembly line for 1 year before prego,I lifted them still at 9 months prego!!! All my mucles where use to it and did not strain or pull. It helped me as I could hold my baby longer and swing her in my arms longer and had a stronger back for giving birth.Ask your doctor. If you lift things all the time and are use to it,as in a job that you need to do it repeditly.

I was told by my OB that it's ok to lift anything you are used to lifting until the 5th month. I worked in a nursing home lifting people up to 250lbs and was ok. You just shouldn't lift anything heavier than you normally would because it can strain your stomach muscles and uterus.
